Reading Journal Homework
Every week children will choose two books to respond to in their reading homework journal. Parents can support their child by reading and talking about the books with them. Children are encouraged to use pictures, labels, and/or sentences for their responses. Since children are at various levels in reading developmentally, the amount of writing each child does in their journal will vary. Please encourage your child to write and spell words "the best way they can" - using transitional not necessarily conventional spelling. This approach does reflect what the children are doing daily in writing workshop and they really are getting quite good at it.
For each entry: (1) Have your child write the book title the best way they can. Copying the tile in their own handwriting will help them learn their letters. (2) Discuss with your child different open-ended questions. - For Example..."What is your favorite part of the book?", "Did you like this book? why/why not?", "Does this book remind you of something that happened to you?" Did you notice anything interesting about the story?", etc. (3) Complete a response using pictures, labels, words, sentences. Again, whatever stage they are developmentally is enough.
Since I read every entry and respond to your child's writing each week, I would like the return of the Reading Journals every Friday.
This Fall marked my third year as a full-time teacher at P.S. 154. As many of you already know, I am a career changer - having worked in the private sector as a fiduciary accountant for fifteen years. When I decided that the private sector was not for me anymore, I enrolled and was accepted at Bank Street College of Education and received my master's degree in elementary education two years ago. I am not only a teacher but I am also a proud parent of three school-age children - ages 17, 15 and 12. My children have attended public schools in Brooklyn and have been a great resource to me. So I also bring to my teaching a parent's perspective which brings with it an extremely valuable source of information. I am deeply committed to the work of our class and the achievement and happiness of our children. I want their year with me to the best time of their school lives. Their success is my success.
If you were back in Kindergarten, what subject would you like to do best?
